How long have you been drawing, Stevie?

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon. My parents are both very creative people and wholly supportive of my interest in art.

What got you into art? What were some of your influences?

My family dentist had all the best "The Far Side" collections, and I soaked them up. My earliest memories of drawing were pastiche of those cartoons. As a teenager, my parents were rad enough to afford portraiture and drawing lessons from a fine-artist in our town. In fact, my first caricature job was at my dentist's holiday party when I was 18.

Do you dabble in other types of art? What specifically?

When I found out the library had comics I tore through all of the "Garflield" books and quickly moved on to all of the comics and cartoons shelved in that section. I drew seven issues of an Elven Space Opera by the time I was 15. I keep meaning to finish that story. It was EPIC!

In other mediums: I design and illustrate posters for plays (and occassionally sets and props), and dabble around with writing songs.

What caricature themes are you the most excited to create?

I like drawing any theme that makes people really happy. One of the best parts of caricature for me is drawing something that makes people see themselves as part of the thing they think is awesome. I draw a lot of people that I do not know very well, so when they tell me what them they want, they're telling me something about themselves. I want to respect their vision and realize it in 2-D as best as I can. For example, drawing a woman as a koala made her so happy she almost cried! I don't personally have an opinion on koalas, but I trust that her love for them is 100% legit. This is the approach I have with themes. Let me help you be the mermaid/batman/pie. I just love drawing, and I love people!! You're the idea person! We can work together!

What's your favorite caricature story?

There are many good stories about drawing in public, but the most recent that springs to mind is when twice in one day, 3 year old girls with cotton candy sat down to be drawn without consulting their parents. They both promptly forgot about being drawn and chowed down on pure sugar like tiny empresses. Hilarious!

Why are YOU the best choice to draw at a special event?

I am a good choice for an event where people want to feel fancy or beautiful. I love getting a good likeness while still making a glamorous drawing.
